Human Resources Manager - Chicago, IL

Summary: Plans, organizes, and directs a wide variety of human resources activities including employment, compensation, performance evaluation, benefits, organizational development and training, employee engagement and recognition/appreciation.  Develops human resources goals and objectives, policies and procedures.  Advises and counsels management and employees on the application of company policies as well as applicable government regulations.
 
Key responsibilities include:
 
  • Coordinates recruitment efforts with hiring managers, conducts interviews, checks background, and references and makes recommendations while advising hiring managers.  Recommends compensation based on company pay structures or market data. Creates and manages position descriptions and composes job postings and ads.  Contracts with outside vendors (background investigations, temporary staff) and negotiates fees.  Prepares new hire documentation and conducts new employee orientations.
  • Develops and maintains compensation policies and procedures including annual merit increase guidelines and salary grades and structures to maintain a competitive compensation plan and equity within the organization.  Participates in compensation and benefit surveys to obtain benchmarking data.  Collaborates with managers and supervisors in reviewing and writing performance evaluations.  Prepares payroll information for processing and maintains HRIS system.
  • Maintains current knowledge of employment legislation and industry trends.  Provides advice and counsel on personnel issues, employee relations, organizational structure, employment changes (promotions, transfers), labor law compliance, and other HR related matters.
  • Monitors disciplinary proceedings and terminations to ensure compliance with company policies and procedures and government regulations.  Conducts exit interviews as appropriate.  Prepares responses to unemployment claims and appeals.
  • Communicates, administers, and implements employee benefits.  Coordinates and conducts open enrollment meetings.  Oversees the administration of open enrollments and changes to ensure timely and accurate processing.
  • Establishes, revises, and communicates human resources policies and procedures such as the Employee Handbook and Family Medical Leave.  Maintains various personnel records and organizational charts.
  • Assists department managers with identifying sources and recommends programs for employee training needs.
  • Has experience with employee retention and ways in which to motivate and reward employees in other ways besides monetarily.
  • Understands and has demonstrated experience in how to engage with employees in person as well as in a virtual environment.

 

 
Requirements include:
 
  • Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field
    • 5 plus years total human resources experience, some management of function preferred.
    • 3- plus years’ experience writing JDs, and grading positions using a variety of comp systems.
    • Solid experience in successfully handling employee relations matters, understanding discretion and confidentiality.
    • 2 years’ experience with HRIS systems.
    • 2 plus years with administering benefits, managing, and communicating open enrollment meetings.
    • 2 plus years recruiting, interviewing, reference checking, and related processes with a history of success.
    • 2 plus years’ experience with coaching managers
    • Some experience providing HR training on a variety of subjects in-house to staff and sourcing outside training.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PPT)
